Hear Me Now: Stories From Providence St. Joseph Health
Providence St. Joseph Health and its Institute for Human Caring sought to highlight its work in caring for the whole person by embedding a storytelling program into patient care. Staff at Providence sites across the Western United States received training and support on how to facilitate meaningful conversations with patients, families, and caregivers.
What we provided
- On-site recording days facilitated by StoryCorps
- On-site StoryCorps Legacy training and professional audio recording equipment for staff and volunteers at Providence St. Joseph sites across their network
- Audio clips, audio cards, and animations from the collected interviews, edited in the StoryCorps style
- Four community events to provide an opportunity for gathering, celebration, and discussion of the project
- Marketing support to Providence for project promotion
- A community archive to each site, as well as an archive for the entire system
Outcomes
- A total of six on-site recording days at two Providence ministries (Alaska and California)
- Training and equipment provided to staff and volunteers from ten Providence sites across five states to begin Hear Me Now recording programs at their ministries
- Ten audio clips produced and highlighted on the Hear Me Now website
- Partnership between Providence Alaska and Alaska Public Media to edit more clips and broadcast stories locally
- One “Storytelling Summit” community event to gather Hear Me Now ministries at the Providence Institute for Human Caring
- One Hear Me Now presentation to invitees from UCLA’s Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health on the value of storytelling and listening
- Two public community listening events and discussions hosted in conjunction with National Healthcare Decision Day in Long Beach, CA.
- Growing community archives at each site, and a collected “Storybank” of more than 250 stories collected from across the Providence St. Joseph network
