After being discharged from the Army in the mid-1990s, Marcus Priolo struggled to find his footing as a civilian. Marine Corporal Al Lejarde finished his service in 2009, and he, too, missed the sense of purpose his career in the military gave him.

Their struggles to cope led both of them to a rehabilitation center in San Diego, designed specifically for veterans. It’s there that they first met and struck up a fast friendship.

Marcus Priolo was at the center for substance abuse treatment. Al Lejarde had recently been laid off and was looking to reconnect with the veteran community by volunteering there.
