This month, alt-country musician and community organizer Sara Trunzo released One Small Step, a song inspired by WERU’s participation in the OSS Hubs program. Commissioned by WERU, the track was written and performed by Trunzo, who took a unique approach to capture the essence of the program through “documentary songwriting.”

Sara immersed herself in the OSS experience by listening to archived conversations and interviewing local facilitators, pulling direct language, phrasing, and rhythms from the personal stories that make up the program. The result is a heartfelt, regionally grounded song that embodies the spirit of both the Maine community and the broader mission of One Small Step.

While the lyrics are deeply connected to Maine’s landscape and WERU’s journey, Sara’s goal is for the song to resonate beyond the station, helping to elevate and inspire other communities involved in the OSS program.
