On September 24 and 25, organizations from across the Bridging Space, including One Small Step, Braver Angels, Living Room Conversations, More in Common, Civic Health Project, Bridge USA, and over 100 others, participated in the inaugural Bridging Movement Summit at the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon. The summit elevated the innovative work of place-based groups, strengthened relationships between movement partners, and facilitated collaborative problem-solving around the most significant issues facing our movement.

Throughout the summit, feedback from movement partners highlighted three unique and essential roles that One Small Step plays in this work. First, we address a key barrier to cross-difference connection by helping participants find and engage with someone from outside their “bubble.” Second, we create an experience and conversation environment that guides conversations toward constructive dialogue, not debate. Finally—and most importantly—One Small Step provides Americans with a way to counter feelings of helplessness and hopelessness through action: a pathway for individuals anywhere to take tangible steps to make a difference and, perhaps, make a meaningful connection in the process.

When I shared this with our staff, they welcomed the feedback, but also agreed this wasn’t the whole story. It was missing the most important perspective: that of our participants and supporters. So, we’d love to hear from you: What is most valuable about what One Small Step offers? I welcome your thoughts directly at [email protected].
