The Manager, People & Culture’s primary area of responsibility will be overseeing recruitment activities for StoryCorps. The Manager will provide consultation and guidance to hiring managers, working with them to craft strong job descriptions and develop recruitment strategy to attract diverse, talented candidates for each role. The Manager will then oversee each step of the recruitment process — e.g., sharing applications, vetting candidates, making offers, and delivering rejections — updating and advising hiring managers along the way.
This role will also be responsible for leading the StoryCorps Culture Club, a volunteer group of staff who work on internal initiatives and events. The Culture Club was established to be more than a party planning committee, and the Manager will lead the Culture Club to develop annual goals and event calendars that will support its mission to improve organizational communications and collaboration; promote internal discussion and education on topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion; celebrate milestones and recognize accomplishments; and of course, encourage positive employee morale.
Additionally, the Manager will oversee the StoryCorps student internship program. This involves managing intern recruitment activities and cultivating partnerships with local colleges, universities, and other nonprofit/public organizations. The Manager will also manage intern orientation, professional development, and the intern “graduation” each session. Finally, the Manager will support staff training & development activities — including coordinating the “core training” for new StoryCorps Producers and Facilitators (the front-line positions that record and archive StoryCorps interviews), which currently happens twice per year. The Manager would also provide support for the annual All Staff Summit and other training & professional development activities, as assigned.

StoryCorps records, shares, and preserves stories from a diverse range of voices; some of our programs include our Griot Initiative to preserve stories of African Americans, our Historias Initiative to record the life experiences of Latinos, and our OutLoud Initiative, focused on the voices of the LGBTQ community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages recruitment activities for all positions, including:
- Develops recruitment strategy to ensure StoryCorps attracts diverse, talented candidates and fills open positions with well-qualified people in a timely manner
- Sources and attracts top talent, leveraging channels such as online sourcing, employee referrals, industry events, university partnerships, etc.
- Leads all stages of recruitment (e.g., writing job descriptions, posting jobs and sourcing candidates, conducting phone screens and interviews, and communicating offers and rejections) and provides support and guidance to managers throughout the hiring process
Staff Training & Development:
- Manages the StoryCorps student internship program
- Collaborates with HR staff on training and orientation activities for new staff, and may lead orientation sessions
- Manages annual employee goal-setting and performance evaluation process
- Coordinates core training for StoryCorps Facilitators and Producers
- Supports other staff training & professional development activities as assigned
Culture, Employee Relations, and Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion:
- Convenes and leads the StoryCorps “Culture Club,” a group of staff volunteers who collaborate on events and activities to improve organizational communication and collaboration; support internal education on topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion; celebrate milestones and recognize accomplishments; and encourage positive employee morale
- Supports HR staff and StoryCorps managers on employee relations issues, as assigned
- Prepares and analyzes HR metrics and produces reports that support decision-making in specified areas
- Researches and makes recommendations regarding employment-related issues (e.g., HR policies and procedures, HR programs/initiatives, trainings, etc.)
- Participates in StoryCorps project teams and other interdepartmental efforts
- Completes other tasks to support the Human Resources Department and StoryCorps staff, as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least 3 years of experience in recruitment, training & development, or a related field
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong organizational and project management skills, and impeccable attention to detail
- Highly proactive style of work and demonstrated ability to function exceptionally and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment; ability to multitask while prioritizing important issues
- Strong critical thinking skills and a track record of proactive problem-solving; must be analytical and entrepreneurial, able to develop and implement creative solutions
- Sound professional ethics and sensitivity to the confidential nature of Human Resources information
- Strong people orientation and emotional intelligence, with demonstrated consensus-building skills
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a growing, changing organizational environment; must be a team player and a self-starter
- Cultural competence/humility and the ability to thrive in a diverse work environment
- Demonstrated effectiveness and ability with public speaking, trainings, and presentations
- Proficiency on a Mac platform
- Fluency in Spanish
