Community Engagement Associates – also known as “Facilitators” – are the public face of StoryCorps, and work to carry out our mission.
Facilitators welcome participants, orient them to the interview process, handle the technical and administrative aspects of recordings, and do whatever they can to make the StoryCorps experience as positive as possible. Facilitators listen carefully to and guide participants during interviews, log content, and assume the role of interviewer when a participant arrives alone. Facilitators are responsible for data entry, archival activities, reporting, and other tasks necessary to the preservation of interviews and upkeep of the recording space and equipment. In order to ensure that our participants reflect the great diversity of the Chicago metropolitan area, full-time Facilitators also take a lead role in outreach to community partner organizations.
Some of the Facilitator’s shifts will take place in our Chicago StoryBooth (located in the Chicago Cultural Center), and some of the shifts will require travel. These trips, recorded through our “Field Recording” service, entail Facilitators bringing portable recording equipment to an offsite location (e.g., an organization, school, church, event, etc.) to record up to six interviews per day. These field recordings primarily take place throughout Chicago and, on occasion, anywhere in the U.S. Trips can range from one day to a week.
The StoryBooth Facilitators travel nationally 1-3 times per year, usually for a 2-3 day trip. There will be a two week Facilitator training held in New York City, beginning October 9.

SCHEDULE & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
The Facilitator will work five days per week on Tuesday through Saturday schedule. Usually, StoryBooth recording days are on Thursdays (11:00am – 6:00pm) and Saturdays (10:00am-5:00pm).
Upon hire, the Facilitator will be required to attend a mandatory 2-week training beginning October 9, in our Brooklyn, NY headquarters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Recording & Archiving:
- Welcome participants and guide them through the interview process, asking questions as appropriate
- Handle all technical aspects of the recording process
- Perform data entry and archival processing tasks to ensure preservation of interviews and an accurate record of the day’s activity
- Act as interviewer with solo participants
- Facilitate interviews with participants scheduled by the Business Development, External Relations, and Production departments as necessary
- Exhibit sensitivity to the special needs of all participants and to those of specific target populations of StoryCorps special initiatives and diversity goals
- Identify tape from interviews to be considered for national and local broadcast
- Solicit donations and enrollment in StoryCorps’ membership program from participants; accurately process and record transactions
- Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of recording equipment
- Work with the Chicago Regional Manager to continually improve services at the StoryBooth, proactively problem-solve issues that arise, and otherwise support the StoryBooth program, as assigned
- Under the direction of the Regional Manager, develop and maintain relationships with Chicago-based community organizations
- Plan and conduct field recording days with community partners on a regular basis; as necessary, travel regionally to complete field recording days
- Plan StoryKit partnerships with community organizations, including training the community partner on how to a conduct a StoryCorps interview, administer paperwork and operate the recording equipment
- Work with community partners to schedule interviews in the StoryBooth each month
- Professionally represent StoryCorps Chicago by tabling at events, speaking at events, conducting workshops and talking to media
- Plan and execute community events
- Perform other duties to support StoryCorps Chicago and StoryCorps, as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Fluency in Spanish, both orally and in writing
- High school diploma or equivalency plus at least 3 years of relevant professional experience, OR college degree plus at least 1 year of relevant professional work experience
- At least one (1) year of experience working with diverse communities in a volunteer or professional setting
- Excellent driving skills and a valid driver’s license
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills
- Ability and desire to provide excellent customer service
- Solid organization skills, multi-tasking ability, and attention to detail
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to contribute to problem-solving activities within a fast-paced, changing organization
- Strong conflict negotiation and collaborative skills
- Cultural competence and the ability to work successfully with diverse groups of people
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and web-mail (e.g. G-mail)
- Comfort with learning and working with new technical equipment (e.g., audio recording equipment, editing software, databases, digital cameras)
- Approximately twice a month, Facilitators transport a bag (25 lbs) and a Field Recording Kit (40 lbs, on wheels) usually via car service
- If traveling via airplane, Facilitators may need to transport and lift equipment into overhead bins
- Experience conducting community outreach and engagement with Latino, Black/African American, LGBTQ, and/or Asian American communities (strongly preferred)
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Proficiency on a Mac platform
- Familiarity with Chicago, and Chicago-based community organizations
- Experience with audio recording equipment, oral history, or documentary work
