Army medic Tom Geerdes discusses his service during the Vietnam War, and the profound effect it had on his life upon his return home.

“What was the biggest change about you from Vietnam?”

After being drafted in 1969, Tom Geerdes served as an Army medic in the 11th Armored Cavalry in Vietnam and Cambodia. Like many veterans, he returned home a changed man. In this short from StoryCorps, Tom shared his long journey toward healing with his daughter, Hannah Campbell.

Army Specialist Justin Cliburn remembers an unlikely friendship he formed with two local Baghdadi boys.

In 2005, Specialist Justin Cliburn deployed to Iraq with the Oklahoma Army National Guard. His job was to train the Iraqi police in Baghdad. While serving, Justin formed an unlikely friendship with two Iraqi boys who lived nearby. In this short from StoryCorps, Justin speaks with his wife, Deanne, about the lasting impression the boys left on his life.

Army infantryman Joseph Robertson discusses a deadly confrontation during World War II that continued to haunt him throughout his life.

“I still see him in my dreams and I don’t know how to get him off my mind.”

Joseph Robertson served in the U.S. Army for 26 years. He was an infantryman during World War II and fought at the Battle of the Bulge, the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the United States during World War II. In this short from StoryCorps, Joseph recounts killing a young German soldier, whose face remains etched into his memory. Joseph passed away in 2009.
