StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation

Dear StoryCorps Alum,

As the fall season is upon us, I am happy to update you on the many exciting things that have transpired over the past few months at StoryCorps.

  • Our new animation series premiered nationally on PBS’s documentary show POV, and so far has received over one million views on YouTube.
  • And, this fall, we began piloting our new Legacy Initiative, which will preserve the stories of people facing life-threatening conditions.

If you would like more information about any of the above, please feel free to contact me.

Between now and October 31, a generous donor will match all donations, up to $50,000. Support StoryCorps by donating today, and your gift will be doubled!

Save the date for November 26, when we'll all be celebrating StoryCorps' 3rd annual National Day of Listening.

Warmly,

christa

AWARD WINNERS

by Kate Brown, Business Development Coordinator

This summer, StoryCorps partnered with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to record interviews with nine outstanding public institutions that received the IMLS's National Medal Award. StoryCorps' Door-to-Door team traveled the country, recording stories at some of America's greatest public institutions.

The Braille Institute Library Services in Los Angeles was our first stop. They translated our Great Questions List into Braille and invited patrons to share their stories. You can read more about StoryCorps Alumni from the Braille Institute, and from  all our locations across the United States, on the StoryCorps blog.

You can also listen to select stories here.

If you would like to bring StoryCorps to an organization close to your heart through our Door-to-Door service, please contact businessdevelopment@storycorps.org.

We will be inviting all our graduates to participate with StoryCorps—women made homeless as a result of domestic violence, homeless veterans, and people coming home following incarceration. We are very appreciative to StoryCorps for the opportunity to record our friends’ stories of struggle and recovery—they have all been homeless and are now again contributing members of our communities.

In our interview, my dad shared a story about how my grandfather was a member of the KKK. He talked about how his family's racist past has faded over his lifetime. In 2008, our family universally supported Obama in the last election. I know that this was a story he wanted to tell, and I'm so glad he got the chance.

I did a StoryCorps interview with my daughter yesterday in the studios of WABE, on the eve of her leaving for college in Asheville, NC. Please, please tell other parents to take a moment to do this with their kids. It was one of the most deeply moving moments in our lives—a chance to stop, take a breath, and reflect on this precious, joyous, bittersweet milestone!
