StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation
StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation

May 20, 2010

Dear StoryCorps Alumni,

StoryCorps celebrated Mother's Day this month with a bang! From a nationwide book tour for our new book Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps, to the release of our new iPhone app, to the premiere of StoryCorps' first animation, Alums like you have been there all along the way to help us celebrate.

Read more about our new animation, Q&A, below. Watch Alums featured in Q&A and StoryCorps Founder & President Dave Isay talk about their StoryCorps experiences on Good Morning America.

Warmly,

Christa

What song makes you smile?

At the StoryCorps recording booth currently in residence at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, this question tends to elicit some of the most joyful responses from loved ones. Music's deep connection to memory extends past nostalgia to the bio-neurological. From singing, to drum circles, to iPod therapy, music also plays an incredibly important role in engaging people with memory loss.

Please join the StoryCorps Memory Loss Initiative for an evening discussion about the therapeutic effects of music for people with Alzheimer's disease.

Memories Are Made of This
Thursday, June 10, 2010 | 7:00PM
Contemporary Jewish Museum
736 Mission St.
San Francisco, CA
Free event—RSVP to memoryloss@storycorps.org

Professionals in the fields of music therapy and memory loss will describe innovative new programs, provide audience members with ideas to incorporate music into their daily lives as caregivers and professionals, and speak to the power of song throughout one's life.

Alumni Talk Back!

We hear from our Alumni all the time about how special their StoryCorps interviews are to them. Here are some heartfelt notes we received recently:

StoryCorps Alumni

Thanks so much for the opportunity to participate in the Memory Loss Initiative with my mom. It was wonderful seeing the strength, pride, and humorous glint in my mom's eyes as she shared stories about her life. It strengthened our bond and validated how vital she still is—a true gift.

—Audrey Newman with her mother, Florence Newman, Huntington Station, NY

I find that I have been more open and authentic with my children since my experience with StoryCorps. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity. I am freer in spirit and know my story deserves to be known—by my children primarily. Thank you!!!

—Janet Kirk with her friend, Colleen Peterson, Oakland, CA

We had a nice time at our interview and felt happy about it when we left, but wow! —we had no idea the recording would be so fine! You get a smooth velvety sound in your recordings. I played the CD twice listening to the sound: I had forgotten how much I like Harriette's voice. Delicious!

—Leighton Bryan with his wife, Hariette Allen, and his brother-in-law, Barry Bonidace, Pensacola, FL

We thank these Alumni for sharing their stories! Please share yours by emailing alumni@storycorps.org.

    Question of the Month

We have a feature on our website that helps you start a new conversation with your friends, family, and loved ones by simply asking a question. Each month we suggest a question for you to email to your friends and family.

    This month's question is:
Is there anything that you've never told me but want to tell me now?

It's simple: Send an email. Ask a question. Listen to what comes back. We'd love to hear what happens!
