StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation
StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation

August 25, 2009

Dear StoryCorps Alumni,

Our StoryCorps community is growing every day. I'm proud to be one of the more than 50,000 Alums who have recorded StoryCorps interviews!

For me, being an Alum is having recorded a great conversation with a loved one, knowing that my story matters, and knowing that it will be preserved for generations to come.

Take a few minutes this month to reflect on what being a StoryCorps Alum means to you, and please share it with us!

Warmly,

Christa

When told my friend I was doing StoryCorps with my parents, she said: Please don't do a tear jerker!!! My parents sang at one point, which of course made me want to cry.

-David Puketza with his parents, Ann and Nicholas Puketza, Brooklyn, NY

We thank these Alumni for sharing their stories! Please share yours! Email alumni@storycorps.org.

In 2005 Jenna Hansen recorded a StoryCorps interview with her stepfather, Peter R. Scholtes, in Madison, Wisconsin. Her brother, Peter S. Scholtes, posted the audio from their interview on his blog,
complicatedfun.com. Jenna wrote to us last month:

Jenna and Peter

Peter R. Scholtes and Jenna
Hansen after their interview in
Madison, Wisconsin

A few years back, I did a StoryCorps interview with my stepdad - who at the time had suffered a stroke and his health was okay, yet fragile.

Peter died last week. I have had many, many friends and family (while searching for his history on the Internet - he was semi-famous for his music and writing) come across the interview [posted on his son's blog], listen to it in its entirety, and then comment on how nice it was to hear him.

How comforting it was to listen, to hear him singing and speaking about the important things in his life, and how nice it is to hear him, even though he has passed away.

Thank you, StoryCorps, for bringing my community comfort in this sad time.

Jenna and Peter's story is another reminder of the power of listening, and the power of sharing your interview with your family and community.

To listen to Jenna and Peter's interview click here.

In addition to listening to and sharing your CD with your family and friends, posting interview audio on your blog is another way you can share your StoryCorps experience with others!

Every day, StoryCorps Facilitators hear remarkable stories from around the country. The StoryCorps Blog is their place to share some of the stories that have touched them individually, and that speak to us all.

In early August, StoryCorps Facilitator Alejandro De La Cruz wrote about a grandfather's passion for education that continues to inspire his son and grandsons:

Generations at StoryCorps

Emeterio (L), with his son and grandsons
in Rochester, New York

Upon entering high school, Emeterio "Pete" Otero predicted he'd "drop out in the tenth grade." What he didn't predict was his desire to help educate others: "I think education creates power. It creates a sense of equity. It also creates a sense of social justice and, for me, that's important."

Emeterio eventually attained a doctoral degree in education and influenced two more generations of Oteros, including his son Christopher, who is currently an English professor at Monroe Community College.

His story reminds us of the importance of passing your stories down to loved ones, from generation to generation.

Want to hear more of Emeterio's story? Visit the StoryCorps Blog to learn about his experiences as a 17-year-old in the military, and the riot that deepened his commitment to social justice.

Each week, StoryCorps Facilitators post new stories from around the country on our StoryCorps Blog. Post your own comments — we love to hear from our Alumni!

Question of the Month

We have a feature on our website that helps you to start a new conversation with your friends, family, and loved ones by simply asking a question. Each month we suggest a question for you to email to your friends and family.

This month's question is:
Do you have a nickname? How'd you get it?

It's simple: Send an email. Ask a question. Listen to what comes back. We'd love to hear what happens!
