StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation
StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation

April 20, 2010

Dear StoryCorps Alumni,

Alumni stories enrich StoryCorps' radio broadcasts, podcasts, and books. We're pleased to tell you that Alumni stories are the cornerstone of our new book Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps. Read more about the book, and about Alumni who have recorded interviews with their moms, below.

We hope that you will help us celebrate StoryCorps' new book by reading it, sharing it with loved ones, and joining us at one of our book tour events throughout the country.

Warmly,

Christa

After recording more than 30,000 interviews in cities large and small, StoryCorps has found that one subject keeps coming up: mom! StoryCorps' newest book, Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps (Penguin Press), celebrates the compassion and dedication of mothers with a collection of more than 30 stories drawn from interviews recorded around the country. Just as with StoryCorps' best-selling debut, Listening Is an Act of Love, Mom's stories of wisdom, devotion, and enduring love will inspire you, make you laugh, and, most important, touch your heart.

This Mother's Day, show your mom how much you care by giving her Mom. Ask for Mom at your favorite local bookstore, or purchase it online at storycorps.org/book or any major bookseller's website! As an added bonus, you can download StoryCorps' free online card, which will help you record a Do-It-Yourself interview with your mom this Mother's Day.

A Story from the Book

Nancy Wright and her son JD

Nancy Wright tells her son, J.D.,
about her mother, Frances Ericksen.

Listen to the story here...

In stories that take us from the woods of New Hampshire to downtown Detroit and beyond, we meet mothers and children from all walks of life who have come to StoryCorps to tell their stories. From Kristi Hager in Montana, who remembers sharing a blissful laughing fit with her mother, to Robert Madden, a gay man from the Mississippi Delta who described his mother's gift of unconditional love--the women in Mom remind us of the strong, witty, and amazing mothers in our own lives, and may just inspire a phone call to mom to say "Thanks."

StoryCorps' Founder and President Dave Isay will be on a national book tour starting April 23, 2010, in the following cities: San Francisco, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Denver, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Boston. For more information, visit storycorps.org/book.

Alumni Talk Back!

We hear from our Alumni all the time about how special their StoryCorps interviews are to them. Here are some heartfelt notes we received recently:

StoryCorps Alumni

In 2007, my mother gave me an interview as fulfillment of a birthday wish. Since, my mother developed dementia, which is progressing rapidly. Many days she has a great deal of difficulty expressing herself at all. In our interview CD, she spoke fluidly and fluently. You can imagine how precious that CD is now!

-Peggy Haas with her mother, Evelyn M. Haas, Menomonee Falls, WI

The StoryCorps experience was something special for me and for my mom. Thank you for putting us at ease and for helping us keep the conversation going.

-Dan Hubbs with his mother, Sheila Hubbs, Queensbury, NY

StoryCorps Alumni

It really is such an incredible thing that you all are doing, not only for the participants, but for the country as a whole. I am proud to have been a part of it, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for working to get so many incredible stories documented and spread.

-Leighton Bryan with her mother, Marian Bryan, New York, NY

We thank these Alumni for sharing their stories! Please share yours by emailing alumni@storycorps.org.

    Question of the Month

We have a feature on our website that helps you start a new conversation with your friends, family, and loved ones by simply asking a question. Each month we suggest a question for you to email to your friends and family.

    This month's question is:
If you could do everything again, would you raise me differently?

It's simple: Send an email. Ask a question. Listen to what comes back. We'd love to hear what happens!

    Donate Now

We hear from Alumni about their desires to help others record their stories through StoryCorps. A donation of $250 will help cover the expenses of recording one story from interview to archive. Donate now to help our Alumni community grow!
