StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation
StoryCorps Alumni: Continuing the Conversation

February 25, 2010

Dear StoryCorps Alumni,

Every Friday, StoryCorps stories just like yours touch millions of listeners when they are broadcast on the radio. I thought I'd share an email we received from a listener who was moved by the interview between MJ Seide and her granddaughter, Genna Alperin, which was broadcast earlier this month.

Dear Ms. Seide and Ms. Alperin,

I just heard your StoryCorps recording this morning. I was amazed by how much love the two of you have for each other...I nearly cried as I listened to your recording. After the story was over, I felt very peaceful and happy, but I wasn't sure why. After thinking about it, I realized that it was because my son has a chance to know the kind of love you share. He's only 18 months old, so I don't know who he will love or why. But if he loves anyone the way you two love each other, I will be very, very happy.

Thanks for sharing that recording!
A StoryCorps listener

StoryCorps is proud to share stories like yours with listeners through our radio broadcast, on our website, and through our podcast. You can listen to MJ and Genna's story in the Listen section of this email or by clicking here.

Warmly,

Christa

StoryCorps is thrilled to partner with local nonprofit organizations in every town or city we visit. These partnerships allow us to record an amazing cross-section of the population.

This month, after a successful partnership with WONDERroot in Reynoldstown, Atlanta StoryCorps' Facilitators had the pleasure of returning to that neighborhood to participate in Raising All Youth Voices, a youth media night. Through the collaboration of WONDERroot, VOX Teen Newspaper, Fuel Media, and StoryCorps, Raising All Youth Voices filled the night with various performances, including spoken word, a live band, and dancing. Not only did the youth have the opportunity to share their talents and thoughts with the crowd, they were also able to hear other teen voices through different media stations set up within the Center, including a StoryCorps listening booth.

The event allowed everyone to catch a glimpse of the depth of the talent and the true power of their voices. Read more on this Atlanta event on the StoryCorps Blog.

Alumni Talk Back!

We hear from our Alumni all the time about how special their StoryCorps interviews are to them. Here are some heartfelt notes we received recently:

StoryCorps Alumni

I think what you do is unparalleled. I am on my 4th interview coming up, and they all blow me away. Thank you for doing what you do.

My experience was wonderful. It gave me a chance to tell some of my story. I'd like to come again, and speak about myself, through the lens of my singular personal experience. Thank you to all who worked so sensitively with the two of us.

-Friends Rafa Chaim-Anshel and Beth Rosen, Jackson Heights, NY

I am now a member of the ten percent club, ten percent of WWII veterans still alive. I recorded my story for my child and their children. One day we will be almost forgotten...I like to think that future generations will find it unique that they can hear my voice.

-Robert Pockington, Suffolk, VA

We thank these Alumni for sharing their stories! Please share yours by emailing alumni@storycorps.org.

  • Question of the Month

We have a feature on our website that helps you start a new conversation with your friends, family, and loved ones by simply asking a question. Each month we suggest a question for you to email to your friends and family.

    This month's question is:
Can you tell me about your first kiss?

It's simple: Send an email. Ask a question. Listen to what comes back. We'd love to hear what happens!

    Donate Now

We hear from Alumni about their desires to help others record their stories through StoryCorps. A donation of $250 would help cover the expenses of recording one story, from interview to archive. Donate now to help our Alumni community grow!
