What is a podcast?

A podcast is an audio program that you subscribe to via the Internet. Each week, StoryCorps releases a podcast on the web, and if you are subscribed, your computer will automatically download it. If you have a portable media device, such as an iPod, you can take your podcasts with you wherever you go.

What software can I use?

StoryCorps recommends Apple iTunes, which is available at no cost and works on Windows and Macintosh computers. As an alternative to iTunes, you can also try Juice, an open-source Internet audio receiver.

Do I need an iPod to listen to the StoryCorps podcast?

Absolutely not! The basic requirement for subscribing to a podcast is a computer with Internet access. Simply subscribe to our feed and your computer will automatically download each new podcast as it is released. The benefit of a portable media player with integrated podcast ability (such as the Apple iPod) is the ease of taking the StoryCorps podcast with you wherever you go. Many other personal media players support podcast subscriptions?be sure to check your instruction manual for more information.

What other podcasts are available?

There are thousands of podcasts available on the Internet, and many are free of charge. NPR offers a large selection of podcasts on their website. iTunes also offers many free and premium content podcasts in their directory.
