“I really looked up to her because she made me want to go to school…”
From Andrea Galeano High School for Arts and Business

Hi my name is Andrea Galeano. I was born in Columbia in 1998. My mom and my dad never got married but my mom wanted the best for me. When I was around 3 to 4 years old her and me flew off to the United States – New York. There my aunt waited for us, and so we stayed. My mom went to work while I went to school. My mom had many kinds of jobs and I really looked up to her because she made me want to go to school, that’s what she really did for me.

Then we moved almost 3 times. And she always helped me do my homework and she’s always the smartest person I knew. She learned her English while teaching me how to do my homework. And almost all my life it has been me and her only and I think that’s what’s made a special relationship with my mom. She’s been both my parents and I really thank her for that. Even though she puts pressure on me to be a great student, I don’t get upset because I understand her. And she’s brave and nice and that’s why I love her.

Response from Edison Diaz, Andrea’s classmate: Thank you for sharing your story with me. Something that stood out to me was when you talked about you and your mom living together because me and my mom always lived together and she never got married with my dad. So I know what you went through, especially because I moved a lot too.

Interview conducted in Queens, NY.
