The Institution

StoryCorps is the acclaimed national nonprofit organization created by MacArthur Fellow Dave Isay in 2003. Its partners include the Library of Congress, NPR, the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Funders include the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Atlantic Philanthropies, the National Endowment for the Arts, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. StoryCorps has expanded rapidly in size and stature during its nine years in existence, and it is quickly growing into a national institution. To date, StoryCorps has recorded and archived more than 45,000 interviews with more than 80,000 participants in every state of the nation. Current goals include the promotion of an education curriculum program, StoryCorpsU; ongoing and future special initiatives (including Latino, LGBTQ, and African American initiatives); and interview collection booths (in Atlanta and San Francisco).

Position Overview

StoryCorps is seeking to hire a skilled and experienced financial professional to become its next Senior Manager, Finance who will plan, organize, and direct the overall financial activities of the organization. He or she plays a crucial role in organizational decision-making and provides a balanced picture to the Executive Team and Board as to the organization’s finances, where the problems lie, and what actions need to be taken. Reporting to the Director of Finance & Administration, the Senior Manager of Finance works in concert with the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board of Directors, and supervises the work of the Associate Manager, Finance. StoryCorps’ Finance department is a small team, and the successful Senior Manager must contribute to the hands-on, day-to-day operations of the department (e.g., working with Development and Programs on budgets, reports, and reconciliations, providing supervision and evaluation to the Associate Manager, etc.), and will also be capable of advising on strategy and thinking “big picture.”

Because this is a senior position, StoryCorps requires someone who is bright, energetic, self-assured, a hands-on manager, an effective problem solver, and a go getter. The successful candidate must have a solid understanding of accounting and fiscal operations, preferably in the nonprofit sector. In addition He or she will have strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, a hands-on management style and the ability to address and solve problems or issues as they arise. It is critical that he or she fit in well with the very dedicated team so he or she will be diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages all financial planning, budgeting, operations and reporting
  • Prepares the annual budget with the Executive Team
  • Prepares reports for internal use and Board and funder review including short and long-term financial forecasts of financial performance, cash flow models
  • Works closely with the Programs Division to create grant budgets and reports
  • Works closely with the Development Department on revenues, budgets, forecasts, and reconciling donations received
  • Analyzes departmental and program expenses and revenues
  • Directs the annual audit and oversees regulatory filings
  • Develops, implements and maintains accounting policies and procedures
  • Maintains relationships with bank officials and auditors
  • Manages the implementation and upgrade of accounting systems
  • Maintains controls over receipts, deposits and disbursements of funds
  • Monitors financial contract compliance
  • Monitors investment and bank activities
  • Performs other duties to support the Finance function, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
  • Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, grant budgeting and reporting
  • 7 to 10 years of applicable experience
  • Proficiency with financial management systems and Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial concepts to individuals at all professional levels and to finance and non-finance positions
  • Exceptional organization skills, multi-tasking ability, and attention to detail
  • Strong affinity for financial analysis
  • Integrity, sensitivity and discretion in dealing with confidential financial information
  • Proven ability as an effective leader, with strong conflict management and collaboration skills
  • Experience providing staff supervision and evaluation
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to contribute to problem-solving activities within a growing, changing organization
  • Cultural competence and the ability to work succcessfully with diverse groups of people.


  • CPA (strongly preferred)
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks
  • Experience in a non-profit organizational environment.
