One Small Step Partner Support Materials

One Small Step is an effort from StoryCorps to connect people so they can remember that people with whom they disagree are human beings. In doing this, we can begin to mend the fraying fabric of our nation — one conversation at a time.

One Small Step is made possible by the generous support of The Hearthland Foundation, the Fetzer Institute, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Charles Koch Institute.

Thank you for your support in spreading the word about this effort.

It was days after the 2016 election when Joseph Weidknecht, a Trump supporter sporting a sign that read “Proud to Be Deplorable” and a “Make America Great Again” cap showed up at a march protesting the election of Donald Trump in Austin, Texas.

Amina Amdeen, a Muslim student at the University of Texas, was one of the marchers who came to the peaceful rally that day before part of the protest broke into violence.

Though they come from opposite ends of the political spectrum, they came to @StoryCorps to remember a moment that day that unexpectedly brought them together. They took #OneSmallStep. Learn more at takeonesmallstep.org

“I try to not bring up politics.”

As with many other families these days, political disagreements have caused a strain in Jenn Stanley’s relationship with her father, Peter.

Jenn is a self-described liberal while Peter votes Republican. Over time, a deepening chasm between them made it difficult to talk about the things they care about, until they sat down at @StoryCorps to try and listen to each other’s points of view.
