Our stay in Delaware was filled with contagious enthusiasm. People visited the booth ready to listen, talk, laugh, cry, pause, and do it all over again. Lucky for us, we shared in this experience. We can’t begin to describe all the beautiful stories we heard, but we can exhibit some candid pictures. When it was all said and done, we met a whole lot of folks ready to flash their smile. This is just a sample, there are many more. Thanks to everyone who came in and shared their stories. The “First State” is a great state.

All in all, we had the pleasure of recording stories at three unique organizations in Raleigh, Durham, and Asheville. Each day provided us glimpses into the true nature of hospitality, the kind that keeps everyone coming back for more.

At the Eastern North Carolina Chapter participants arrived hours early to chat with their support group leaders, Peggy Smith and DeeDee Harris (pictured above). There was so much laughter, we barely stayed on schedule. The next day, family members traveled hours to be present for their loved one’s interview at Duke University’s Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (pictured above). Last but not least, Memory Care provided us with the same loving care they deliver to their patients (staff pictured above). Thanks to everyone who participated in one way or another.

Located in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood, our friends at the Peralta Hacienda made StoryCorps Griot’s visit a day-long community event, attracting a group of participants that included Oakland natives and men and women of multi-racial backgrounds. We look forward to Round 2 this Sunday!

Databasing at the end of an awesome day at The Hacienda

The next day we ended up staying in our neck of the woods along Lake Merritt and visited Stagebridge’s offices on Harrison Street. You may remember us mentioning this organization last week and their super star storyteller, Marijo. But in addition to hearing Marijo do what she does best (tell her story), we met Evelyn and Jimmie Lee Wesley, an Oakland couple that completed two interviews that day. Between their stories of Oakland, then and now, and the wisdom they’ve acquired along the way, both storytellers made our Stagebridge morning all the better!
