Opening Day in Denver, CO
Opening Day in Denver was a full day of celebration. Colorado Public Radio welcomed us with open arms and bright t-shirts. Our first booth storyteller was John Kite who has played piano at Denver’s Brown Palace for over 20 years. We were also delighted to welcome Rhoda Krasner, owner of the Denver institution, Lakeside Amusement Park.
After the press conference, listening became an act of community with 12 Colorado storytellers who told their tales to a curious audience in Skyline Park. “What designs are tied up in our memories?” Storysmith Susan Marie Frontczak asked in her narrative. The ‘designs’ at this performance were diverse and colorful: Brahmans, 60th wedding anniversaries, adventures on a tricycle and Christmas trees. That was only the beginning…

Dear Alexandra,
Thank you so much for your warmth and for bringing the StoryCorps booth to Denver. I am so deeply grateful for having the opportunity to share my love for and loss of my brother in conversation with my dear friend Kristen. Carson was a bright star that burned out too quickly, and we hope to keep his light going. StoryCorps is such a brilliant idea — everyone has a story to tell, and we can learn so much from listening.
Those who are bereaved by suicide often suffer in silence — by hearing stories like ours, people can know they are not alone, and that together — listening and supporting each other — we can make it through these dark nights of the soul. Thank you for letting us share. Suicide Awareness and Prevention Week is the second week in September — perhaps that might be a good time to share stories like ours.
Thank you,
Sally Spencer-Thomas

Sally,
It was a privilege to listen to your conversation with Kristen last week. I just went to the Carson J Spencer Foundation website (www.carsonjspencer.org) and am further inspired by your amazing efforts!
Thank you for sharing your brother’s story,
Alex

Your description of the opening in Denver makes me very excited for the San Francisco booth to open this fall! Keep up the great work you are doing in Colorado and I look forward to more interesting postings!

Thank you so much for sharing this! Will StoryCorps be coming to Denver in 2009? How can we get involved?
Thank you,
Katherine
