Summer is here, and StoryCorps San Francisco is gearing up for an exciting June! Check out the events below for a preview of what we’re up to this month.
Saturday, June 9 –We kick off a month of events this weekend at the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center to celebrate Pride Month at their Annual Pride Party. This year marks The Center’s 10th anniversary, and we’re especially honored to be part of this momentous occasion. This year, we’ll have a listening station featuring stories from our 2011 partnership with The Center. But we’ll also record more stories this year with staff and other community members who have helped make The Center such a vital and supportive institution. Click here for more information and a full line-up of the day’s activities.
Sunday, June 10 – StoryCorps San Francisco joins in the nationwide celebrations of Loving Day. This year marks the 45th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court case legalizing interracial marriage in the United States. To honor this historic decision, we’ll hold a special community recording day for multiracial, multiethnic, and mixed heritage individuals, couples, and families. To sign up for an interview, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. In the meantime, get in the mood for Loving Day with these conversations recorded with the Guidi family and husband and wife, Majid Al-Bahadli and Diana Klatte.
Sunday, June 17 –Just in time for Father’s Day, StoryCorps San Francisco invites you to share stories about fathers and fatherhood. What better a way to honor your father, your children, or a father you know? Sign up here for a Father’s Day recording slot.
Saturday, June 23 – The Marin City Community Development Corporation celebrates Juneteenth, the African-American holiday commemorating the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of slaves in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and the Union soldiers, landed in Galveston, Texas and announced that the war had ended and that the “enslaved are now free!” Later this month, StoryCorps San Francisco will participate in Marin County’s street fair that will include local vendors and arts and crafts.
